Learn About Owner James A. Allen
Virginia Medical Training Academy founder James A. Allen has served the fire and rescue community for 30 years. He joined the Upper Caroline Fire Department at the age of 15 as a junior firefighter. He never imagined he would develop such a passion for the profession while helping out with fundraisers and learning the trade. He responded to his first incident before he could even drive, a hazmat incident involving a freight train with ruptured fuel tanks.
By the age of 16, James began his formal training as a firefighter. There, he learned all the basics of firefighting and operations. From there, he progressed through Firefighter II and Hazmat Operations. He fought his first house fire at the age of 16, his own chief's house.
By age 17, James was invited to do a ride-along at the Bowling Green Volunteer Rescue Squad, where he first discovered that EMS was also something he liked to do. He took an Emergency Medical Technician class and later progressed through Shock Trauma Technician, Cardiac Technician, EMT-Intermediate and, finally, Paramedic.
At his volunteer department, he served various roles over 12 years including Vice President and EMS Captain, where he was responsible for all aspects of the EMS division of his department. He was hired on as a firefighter/medic with the City of Fredericksburg on September 25, 2000, at the age of 24. He obtained his paramedic certification four years later and was promoted to an EMS supervisor for Fredericksburg in 2004 as well. In 2009, James obtained the rank of sergeant and in 2018 became a lieutenant within the department.
While volunteering, James sought out and became an EMT instructor with the Virginia Office of EMS in 2001. When the state transitioned to education coordinators, he also obtained that certification in 2011. He became the education coordinator for Commonwealth Criminal Justice Academy in 2015 and led that program for five years until December 2020.
With Virginia Medical Training Academy, James begins a new chapter in his life and hopes to continue to give back to the community which gave him so much throughout his life. For more information, call (804) 789-0414 or fill out our online form to request a call back.
